In a surprise move, Honda has unveiled two Civic concepts at the North American International Auto Show.

Designed to preview the 2012 production models, the Sedan and Si Coupe concepts feature steeply raked windscreens, upward sweeping character lines, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Under the hood, power will be provided by the "widest array of engine choices available in its class." Options will include conventional petrol units, a natural gas variant, and a hybrid. The latter is slated to adopt the newest Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system which will be powered by a lithium-ion battery - a first for a Honda.

The 2012 Civic will go on sale this summer, so stay tuned for additional details.

Honda develops a new 2.2 liter diesel unit with 150 PS (110 kW / 148 bhp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque

Honda has released more details on the upcoming Euro-spec 2012 Civic model and it touting the car's new diesel unit as a mark of its competitiveness.

The new i-DTEC engine is a 2.2 liter unit with an output of 150 PS (110 kW / 148 bhp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque with a very competitive CO2 emissions quotient of 110 g/km. Models fitted with a manual transmission also get an idle-stop system that shaves 5 g/km off of the standard CO2 figure.

Says Katsushi Watanabe, Development Leader for the i-DTEC, "Reducing the emissions was our key target and we're proud to say that we have achieved this without compromising the high performance character of the engine. We want our customers to have fun when they drive this car."

The U.S.-spec Honda Civic has long been a favorite of the preeminent American consumer magazine, Consumer Reports.

But now the magazine says the new 2012 Honda Civic is not up to par with the competition. The car's rating has suffered a precipitous drop over the previous model. The new 2011 Civic LX sedan scored 61 points overall, compared with 78 points for last year's model. The Civic had made Consumer Reports' Top Picks list for five of the last ten years.

Honda, like all Japanese automakers, is suffering from a strong Yen and the effects of the earthquake and tsunami from last march which have plagued production in the auto industry there. The automaker tried to cut costs in the development of the new Civic, a move which resulted in less-refined elements of the new car which likely did not impress test staff at Consumer Reports.
