Hey Apple And The Rest, “Android Will Stay Open” And Alive :) Motorola Mobility In Google's Hands!

Android Will Stay Open http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

I guess Android community must be a bit at ease now that Google(GOOG) has some Mobile muscle behind it to defend and protect Android. Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page wrote a blog post that Google has acquired Motorola Mobility(MMI) not only because of its strength in Android smartphones and devices but it's leadership in "the home devices and video solutions business.”

He is referring to millions of cable modems that is sitting in millions of houses. The Motorola alliance might help Google to get Google TV, into the cable provider domain. Motorola Mobility seperated from Big Motorola and formally launched the new company in January 2011

But the news that will tickle Steve Jobs is that patents Motorola Mobility holds.portfolio of 17,000 patents and another 7,000 patents pending globally should those patent bullies at bay. Good work Google, Motorola! Because I wand my Android phone, not any of the the hyped up phones by Mobile Mafia.

Press Release;

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. & LIBERTYVILLE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Google will acquire Motorola Mobility for $40.00 per share in cash, or a total of about $12.5 billion, a premium of 63% to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares on Friday, August 12, 2011. The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies.

The acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.

Larry Page, CEO of Google, said, “Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.”

Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, said, “This transaction offers significant value for Motorola Mobility’s stockholders and provides compelling new opportunities for our employees, customers, and partners around the world. We have shared a productive partnership with Google to advance the Android platform, and now through this combination we will be able to do even more to innovate and deliver outstanding mobility solutions across our mobile devices and home businesses.”

Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google, said, “We expect that this combination will enable us to break new ground for the Android ecosystem. However, our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices.”

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals in the US, the European Union and other jurisdictions, and the approval of Motorola Mobility’s stockholders. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2011 or early 2012.

United States of Android and iOS

United States of Android and iOS http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Android and iOS union is anything but a dream so I was very surprised when I saw the title of this post. But when I looked closely they are as United as Republicans and Democrats at the moment on the hill. In this case Yellow is where Android DOminate and Blue is where iOS dominates. Blackberry area is depicted by Gray and square hatched are remains neutral for now..
All others are
There’s a clear pattern of Android over-indexing in the South and South west parts of the country with iOS doing well in the North east and Midwest states. Even though Blackberry is on the run, downhill, it is favoured by some states in the centre and east. Most probably waiting for contracts to run through.
The result above and other information in the paper is based on data pulled from over 83 million users on the Jumptap network. The paper is actually the MobileSTAT (Simple Targeting & Audience Trends),a monthly report on targeting and audience trends in mobile advertising.

Box.net Relies On HTML5 For Mobile Web Service; Also Launches PlayBook And Android Tablet Apps

Box PlayBook And Android Tablet Apps http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Making it easier for everyone to share and store files in the cloud, Box (Boxnet) on Thursday updated their Android app to include tablet support, abd have added a new app for RIM's PlayBook, and revised its mobile website with HTML5 features. Box, an enterprise-oriented cloud storage and sharing service, says that in the first seven months of 2011, it has seen an increase in mobile customer implementations of more than 600% compared to all of 2010

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 11, 2011) - Box today launched three new mobile solutions, with Box for Android Tablet, Box for PlayBook, and an all-new HTML5 compatible mobile browser. Due to escalating mobile adoption in the enterprise, Box has already seen an increase of over six hundred percent in mobile customer implementations within the first seven months of 2011 compared to all of 2010. Box's new solutions answer growing demand for multi-platform support, and reinforce the company's mission to make it easy for today's mobile workers to access and share content from anywhere, on any device.

"Enterprises that are embracing mobility are also having to embrace platform diversity, as employees want to have access to tools and content from the devices of their choice," said Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box. "The future of enterprise mobility won't be owned by any one platform, and we're investing aggressively to deliver an unparalleled experience across all devices in a way that platform-committed vendors like Microsoft fundamentally cannot."

According to the August 2011 report by Forrester Research Inc., "The Forrester Wave™: Mobile Collaboration, Q3 2011," in which Box was named a leading mobile collaboration vendor, "We now live and always will live in a multi-device world, where companies and consumers choose different smartphone and tablet platforms and expect to get apps on all of them. This means that companies need vendors that already support the most important mobile platforms: iOS, Android, and RIM, as well as Windows and Macintosh computers and the common browsers."

Today's announcement includes Box for Android tablet and Box for PlayBook, both providing simple and secure collaboration and content sharing for Honeycomb and RIM platforms. These new mobile offerings join Box's apps for iPad and TouchPad, rounding out the company's tablet app lineup. Additionally, to ensure that every user has an unparalleled Box experience on any device, Box launched a rebuilt version of m.box.net, its mobile web offering. The new m.box.net site leverages HTML5 features to enable users to easily view files and folders as well as directly add comments, share new content and search throughout their entire account quickly on any device.

Companies such as Pandora, TaylorMade, Clear Channel and Six Flags are successfully building collaborative mobile workforces and realizing the benefits of Box's mobile solution. To date, downloads of Box's native apps total approximately 400,000 for iOS and 100,000 for Android.

Motorola To Collect IP Tax From Other Android Makers?

Motorola To Collect IP Tax http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Now the Android world is going totally mad. Google what you say? Add $50 to Android Phone Cost of Manufacturing with all these taxes? Get your partners together!

"Motorola, who has long been one of Google’s key Android partners, happens to have a pretty massive patent portfolio. You’d think that would work in Google’s favor, since at least one of its major partners can hold its own against the likes of Apple and Microsoft. Yeah, not so much. Motorola has actually hinted, and subsequently more-than-hinted, that it may “potentially collect royalties” with its patent trove, rather than just defend itself, reports Unwired View. "

Android Leads iOS, RIM and Nokia In Mobile OS Sales! : Gartner

Android Leads iOS, RIM and Nokia http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
If you wonder why Apple is suing everyone and anyone with Android alliance, this might be one of the reasons. Gartner published that the Google’s mobile OS, Android now accounts for 43.4% of all smartphone sales, up from 17.2% Q2 2010. Apple reached 18.2% of the smartphone share, up from 14.1% at the same time last year.
Together Android and iOS accounts for 62% of the Smartphone market share, which was only a 31% a year earlier.
Nokia's Symbian OS share is now at 22.1%, taking a big slide, down from 40.9% a year earlier. RIM did not fare well either, RIM's share of smartphone market droped to 12% in Q2, from 19% one year ago.
Microsoft was below the radar with 1.6% of the smartphone market share.
Gartner also told us that the worldwide sales of mobile devices grew 16.5% from this time last year, to reach 428.7 million units. Smartphones sales were up 74% year-over-year and accounted for 25% of the overall sales in Q2 2011, up from 17% in Q2 2010

Motorola Kore, Next Android Tablet From Motorola

Motorola Kore Android Rumors http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Looks like Motorola is gearing up for a new Android tablet. The new tablet seem to concentrate on the screen real estate rather than the real reasons the Motorola XOOM's failure to dethrone iPad2 or iPad.

The new tablet is slated to run Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and ditching the 16:9 screen ration for for squarish 4:3 ration screen, just like the iPad2. I am sure with assumed high resolutions like 2048 X 1536 will surely beat iPad2. Wake up Motorola, if your Motorola XOOM 16GB was $399, I would be holding it instead of far better Asus EEE Pad Transformer. If the tablet is tad lighter, it would have been a bonus as well.

There are also guesses that the slate will have Kal-El quad core processor from Nvidia. That wold be nice and people will ditch their notebooks, like I have with with Asus EEE Pad, with the keyboard attachment.

The name information was gleamed from some domain names Motorola registered last week, MotorolaKore.com, KoreMotorola.com, Moto-kore.com, MotoKore.com, and Motorola-Kore.com.

New FT Web App Becoming More Popular Than The Native App

FT.COM web app http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Financial Times Web App for mobile devices is becoming very popular. Even more popular than the native apps in the case of iPad and iPhone.
Guardian posted that currently the FT web App is enjoying 350000 people have access the mobile site.
"350,000 people have used the web app now, and more than half of them have bookmarked it to their homescreens, In the first week, we saw more traffic coming from the web app than from the native app, and that has been sustained: the traffic to the web app far exceeds traffic to the native app."according to Rob Grimshaw, managing director of FT.com.
FT is preparing an Android version of the app (when I visited the site there is already an app for Samsung Galaxy Tab) and Blackberry is to follow. (This is abain bad news for RIM, a financial news site is preparing the Blackberry version of the app last says a lot about RIM).
I am a fan of web apps as you are not bound by device manufactures whims and do not have to pay the mafia fees to be on App stores.

Following are some benefits of FT.com web app:

  • Web browser access – No app store download needed
  • Automatic enhancements – No need to visit an app store for the latest version
  • Reading offline – The latest edition is automatically stored for offline access
  • Speed – Improved performance on most connections
  • Greater range of content – Including video on iPhone

Patents Nightmares, Sometimes There Are Good Dreams!

Today I was reading about M$, Apple and others attempt to thwart Android, not with innovation but by acquiring patents and suing the manufactures of Android phones, as much as $15 per device.
Then I read about the Novel Patent portfolio saga (old news actually), how the CPTN, (M$ + Oracle +Apple + EMC) which was a cover company for those big boys who was hell bent on getting to patents and sharing among the four of them, changed agreements to address the concerns of DOJ. If the patents were to be shared by these four companies, Linux had no where to go but underground. Thanks DOJ;

In order to address competition concerns of the department, CPTN and its owners have revised their agreements to provide that:

· Microsoft will sell back to Attachmate all of the Novell patents that Microsoft would have otherwise acquired, but will continue to receive a license for the use of those patents, the patents acquired by the other three participants and any patents retained by Novell;

· EMC will not acquire 33 Novell patents and patent applications that have been identified as related to virtualization software;

· All of the Novell patents will be acquired subject to the GNU General Public License, Version 2, a widely adopted open-source license, and the Open Invention Network (OIN) License, a significant license for the Linux System;

· CPTN does not have the right to limit which of the patents, if any, are available under the OIN license; and

· Neither CPTN nor its owners will make any statement or take any action with the purpose of influencing or encouraging either Novell or Attachmate to modify which of the patents are available under the OIN license.

Eclipse (Most Open), Android (Most Closed) Open Projects, Vision Mobile!

Eclipse (Most Open), Android (Most Closed) Open Projects, Vision Mobile! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like the project I am spending most time with these days (Android) and the tool I am using to work on the projects (Eclipse) have ended up in opposite ends of openness scale, according to a EU funded project. Finding this news just after learning about Mozilla org's B3G, Boot to Gecko project, confuses me greatly. Yet I think Android is much better than those 100% closed projects such as iOS and Windows phone 7.
The recently published Open Governance Index, by Vision Mobile, a study which was partly funded by webinos, an EU-funded project working on a platform for web applications across mobile, PC, home media (TV) and in-car devices.
The report is available for download free of charge and examines;
  • Open source cultural roots and working upstream vs downstream
  • Open source licenses vs governance models
  • Analysis and classification of governance models
  • In-depth reviews of Android, Qt, Symbian, MeeGo, Mozilla, WebKit, Linux and Eclipse
  • Best practices in creating an open source project

Mozilla Foundation To Build "Boot To Gecko", B2G To Rival Android.

Mozilla Foundation To Build "Boot To Gecko", B2G To Rival Android http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like Androids openness being questioned and some people are beginning to take action and build a better an open mobile OS. The withholding of Honeycomb Source seem to have spurred to the new development;

“Android is not open source in the sense of ‘open technology.’ Android APIs are proprietary Google sauce, not broadly accepted and adopted open web standards. At some point Android used to be at least ‘available source’ where Google would publish secretly/internally developed source code/technology after the fact as products ship, but even those times seem to be over now. I would love to boot my custom Android build on my Galaxy Tab 10, but no luck, Google refuses to release the source.

“We want to do Boot to Gecko the way we think open source should be done. In the open, from day 1, for everyone to see and participate.”

This was revealed a while back but everyone is talking about it now. According to eWeek, the OS will be based on Android and will be open source in real time, not after the product has been shipped.
I wonder about the validity of the project but the situation is similar, where Netscape went against then mighty Microsoft.
You can read more about it at eWeek and Mozilla.org itself.

iPhone 5 Rumor Updated, It Will Come In October!

iPhone 5 Rumor http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
The rumor that the new iPhone will come in September seems to hold no water according to the latest rumor by All Things D. Sources with Knowledge (SwK) has told them that the phone will arrive on store shelves in October.
The other rumor that AT&T has supposedly blocked out employee vacations during last two weeks of September must then for launching an Android phone perhaps?
“I don’t know why AT&T’s calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it’s not for an iPhone launch,” a source familiar with Apple’s plans said.
Still there is no solid information on the the date of release nor the device. But I am sure it will be something similar to shrunk iPad2, Dual core processor, dual mode baseband and dual cameras. Hope it will not kill people like "iPad2 Kills" or the other iPhone Kills.

Let Google Maps 5.8 for Android Take You Places And More With Photo uploads, My Places, and more!

Google Maps 5.8 for Android http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like Google Maps for Android is ready to take you places or help you to organize and keep the memories you made at various places. Because the first thing I read bout the Google Maps 5.8 for Android was that it can complement and improve, Google Places and Google Latitude, by (I have not downloaded the Google Maps to my Android Tablet, EEE Pad Transformer, yet so I will have to take Benjamin Grol, a Google Product Manager's word for it;
Upload photos for a Place
My Places as a simple way to manage the Places you’ve starred and recently viewed
Descriptive terms for Places in search results
Add a new Place on-the-go when checking in
With photo upload feature you can enhance others experience of places you have been by contributing photos of places you have been. If your photo is a striking one, your photo might end up being the profile photo of that place page!

My places and descriptive terms came to the desktop version of Google Maps this June but now you, moblie Google map user, can enjoy the same features. Descriptive terms will appear when you search places. If you press your phones 'Menu' button while in the Google Maps, you will be taken to 'My Places'.
The other notable feature is now you are able to add places while on the go. This will come in handy if one of your favourite places is not in the Places list. If you do a search on places for a location that you know exists and come up with nada, you can use the option, 'add a place', to add the place that can be checked in via Latitude. Do not forget that ‘Download map area’ has been renamed ‘Pre-cache map area.’
So the next thing for me and you is to get the Google Maps 5.8 for Android but make sure that you have at least Android 2.1+ OS on your device.

Smartphone Market Supremacy : iOS vs Android, A Consumer Point Of View!

Android, Apple And RIM
Smartphone Market Supremacy http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Looks like more people are wanting an iPhone rather than an Android phone, according to a survey conducted by ChangeWave Research.Of 4163 respondents questioned, up to 46% of consumers planning to buy a smartphone in the next 90 days say they'll choose an Apple iPhone and 32% will look for an Android and measly 4% are still attached to them BlackBerry phones.
The survey sample consisted of 89% U.S. respondents and 11% from outside the U.S.

While the sample of respondents are wide enough to conclude where consumers want, it does not reveal what consumer can afford. Apple's marketing knew how to monger hype and it is paying off. Most of the consumers these days, associate iPhone with mobile phones, when they talk about phones generally or dream about them.
This seems to be extending beyond the iPhones themselves according to the same survey, people are willing to extend the loyalty in to other Apple products as well, Specially iCloud. 26% of the current Apple customers and 13% of non-Apple users have admitted that they will be swayed towards Apple products due to iCloud.
That is exactly where Google seem to fail. Google has been providing cloud services for ages, like GMail storage but I guess beyond techies, many people do not even know it exists, let alone by a catchy name like iCloud. Microsoft and Amazon are not doing any better in that front either.
The differences do not stop there, 70% of current iOS device users said that they were satisfied with Apple products and it was 50% for Android users. Windows phone 7 users, 57% were very happy with their phones.
I was at a major retail store for electronic goods to get a protective shield installed on my iPad 2 (64GB) and my colleague's Asus EEE Pad Transformer. I saw many people lingering around Apple iPad isle but equally similar number on all other tablet isles.

I think this report will shed some light into how people are thinking when it comes to mobile phones and other associated devices. So if you are associated with selling or developing for mobile market, the information can come in very handy.

Report details include:

  • Competition between Apple (AAPL), Motorola (MMI), Research In Motion (RIMM), Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), Samsung and HTC, among others
  • Customer Satisfaction Ratings by Manufacturer
  • Satisfaction Comparison: Apple vs. RIM BlackBerry – 4 Year Comparison
  • Planned Buying Trends by Operating System – biggest winners and losers
  • 3 Year Comparison of Android OS Demand vs. Apple iOS Demand
  • Customer Satisfaction Ratings by Mobile OS
  • Growth Trends: Overall Smart Phone Market
  • Impact of Apple iCloud Service and Planned Consumer Usage
  • Mobile Apps: Android OS vs. Apple iOS – comparison of money spent and number of apps downloaded in past 90 days

Asus EEE Pad Transformer TF101G, A 3G Enabled Transformer On Sale In Europe.

Asus EEE Pad Transformer TF101G, http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Asus EEE Pad Transformer TF101, my choice of Android Tablets, has got a cousin now with 3G capabilities. I am too late for the new device as many times I had wished for 3G connectivity for my transformer on the run. I had to settle for my MiFi to connect my transformer to the net on those occasions.
But for those who were holding on for the 3G enabled device, it has appeared in Europe for €499 (16GB) and €599 (32GB), a bit more than the amount I paid for my Transformer. The device is named Asus EEE Pad Transformer TF101G, with G at the end denoting the 3G.
Asus Italia has the product online already.
May the product reach all those who are waiting for it eagerly.

Hands-on with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

The folks at MobileBurn takes a look at the new updated Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android Honeycomb tablet that was revealed at CTIA 2010. The Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 is the bigger brother of the Galaxy Tab, featuring a 10.1″ display 1GHz dual-core processor, Android 3.0 and an 3MP camera that can record video in HD.

 Shortly after that leak of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1″ specs, now there are new pictures of the new tablet and the Galaxy S2 smartphone, too.
Along with these pics comes confirmation of those specs we reported on earlier — the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab has an 8-megapixel camera with HD recording and playback, 1200 x 800 resolution, and runs the Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) OS.

Comparing iPhone 4 vs. the smartphone elite: EVO 4G, N8, Pre Plus, and HD2

We know how the iPhone 4 sizes up against the aging 3GS -- but how does it fare against its fiercest competitors from all the major platforms? We wish we had some production Windows Phone 7 kit to check out here, but in the meantime, take a look at the results against the gruesome foursome of the EVO 4GN8Pre Plus, and HD2. You might be surprised by some of the results -- and sorry, RIM, you don't get to play until you bring some fresh, media-heavy hardware to the table. Nothing personal!
 iPhone 4 launch timing coincides with the end of many unlimited data plans — including AT&T’s. Unless you’re grandfathered it with an existing plan, that is.

Here are the results (from most to least) for the “unlimited” plans:
  • Incredible: $3,079
